Patricia Pichurski

Patricia Pichurski

Assistant Professor of English

Patricia Pichurski received her B.A. in English and Humanities from Marygrove College in 1973 and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1982. She is co-director of the Nancy McDonough Geschke Writing Center. Her research interests are rhetoric and composition, writing across the curriculum, writing center operations, and children's and adolescents' literature. She is a member of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, Council of Writing Program Administrators, Modern Language Association, National Council of Teachers of English, and Children's Book Council.

ENG 107 Introduction to Writing

Concentration on the concepts of focus, organization, and development of expository writing. Introduction to research skills and writing, and the use of technology in composition. One additional weekly period of tutor­ing is required. Students must receive a final grade of at least C or retake the course. Credits from this course are not counted toward the English major.

ENG 108 Academic Writing

Concentration on developing students’ abilities to produce analytical academic writing. Special attention to developing research skills and strategies. Students will be engaged in reading and discussing texts and writing within complex rhetorical situations. Students will work on a variety of types of written assignments ranging from short writing activities to fully-developed essays. Individual tutorial sessions will supplement class work. Students will learn to use technology as an aid to writing. Students must receive a final grade of at least C or retake the course. Credits from this course are not counted toward the English major.

ENG 312 Advanced Written and Oral Communications

ENG 521 Adolescent Literature: Realism, Fantasy, and Historical Fiction

This course will concentrate on analyzing literary works whose primary audience is middle and high school age students. The course will focus on works in the genres of realistic fiction, historical fiction, and fantasy/science fiction. Literature will be broadly defined to include printed texts, films, television, and games, including works by authors such as Lois Duncan, Rosa Guy, Virginia Hamilton, S.E. Hinton, Ursula K. Le Guin, Mildred D. Taylor, and Cynthia Voigt.
