Audrey Becker

Audrey Becker

Assistant Professor of English

Audrey Becker received her M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Michigan. She received her B.A. in English at Barnard College of Columbia University, with a junior year abroad at University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Her research interests include medieval and early modern literature and culture, history of the English language, drama and performance, Shakespeare, Renaissance poetry, Celtic literatures, the history of song from medieval to modern, and literature by and about women from classical antiquity through the early modern period. She co-edited Welsh Mythology and Folklore in Popular Culture: Essays on Adaptations in Literature, Film, Television and Digital Media (McFarland 2011), and has published on Sting and John Dowland. She has been at Marygrove since 2008. She has a background as a freelance writer and as a performing songwriter; her songs have been heard on a number of national television shows including Dr. 90210, Guiding Light, and The E! True Hollywood Story: Drew Barrymore.

ENG 108 Academic Writing

Concentration on developing students’ abilities to produce analytical academic writing. Special attention to developing research skills and strategies. Students will be engaged in reading and discussing texts and writing within complex rhetorical situations. Students will work on a variety of types of written assignments ranging from short writing activities to fully-developed essays. Individual tutorial sessions will supplement class work. Students will learn to use technology as an aid to writing. Students must receive a final grade of at least C or retake the course. Credits from this course are not counted toward the English major.

ENG 317 The English Language: History, Structure, and Grammar

Required for secondary teacher certification.

Study of the development of the English language and an introduction to structural principles and current linguistic theories. Topics include phonetics, language origin and history, word structure, syntax, dialects, language in social interaction, grammar and usage for teachers.
